This glass negative is titled as a portrait of Harry F. Sinclair, the oil executive whose name became linked with the Teapot Dome affair. His company obtained a lease on the Teapot Dome naval oil reserve in Wyoming in 1922, and the congressional investigations into federal oil leasing that followed drew national attention around the year this negative is dated. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio active in the early twentieth century, made many portraits of public figures like him. The title comes from information written on the negative and has not been independently verified, and the streaks and blemishes visible on the glass reflect natural deterioration of its original coating.
