Harry M. Daugherty, the Ohio politician who managed Warren G. Harding's presidential campaign, takes the oath of office as attorney general in this view dated March 5, 1921, the day after Harding's inauguration. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that recorded official life in the capital in the early twentieth century, made the original glass negative, which Herbert A. French gave to the Library of Congress in 1947. Streaks and other blemishes on the plate come from natural deterioration of its original coating, a common condition in glass negatives of this age.
