Here a glass negative records President Calvin Coolidge posing with members of the Girl Scouts on October 20, 1923, a date that places the picture in the second year of his presidency after he took office following Warren G. Harding's death in August 1923. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented officials, events and daily life in the capital during the early twentieth century, made the negative, and it reached the Library of Congress as a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French. The record's title comes from data the studio wrote on the negative or its sleeve and is not independently verified, so the exact occasion is best treated with some caution. Viewers may also notice streaks and blemishes, which come from the natural breakdown of the original glass coatings.
