This portrait of Mrs. Emily N. Blair survives as an 8 by 6 inch glass negative, a format that captured fine detail in studio and outdoor portraits of the early twentieth century. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., commercial studio active from the first decade of the 1900s into the 1920s, produced large numbers of such negatives, and its collection now at the Library of Congress documents the city's public life and everyday residents. The sitter's name comes from notes written on the negative or its sleeve and has not been independently verified, so the identification should be treated as provisional. The glass also shows streaks and blemishes from the gradual breakdown of its original coating, which are worth noticing when studying the image.
