Identified by its title as chairman of the Republican Women's National Executive Committee, the sitter is Mrs. Medill McCormick, known in public life as Ruth Hanna McCormick. The title is unverified, and the second name on the negative is cut short, so the record gives only part of the story. The plate comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented politicians, officials and public events in the early twentieth century, when women were gaining the vote and taking on larger roles in party politics. Visitors should notice the streaks and blemishes across the glass, which come from natural deterioration of the original coating rather than damage in use.
