The record identifies this glass negative only as "Mrs. Nelson," a title the National Photo Company supplied on the negative sleeve and that has not been independently verified, so the sitter remains unidentified. It was probably made between 1910 and 1925, when the company, based in Washington, D.C., produced large numbers of portraits and street views on glass plates. Glass was the standard support for studio and commercial work of that era, before flexible film became common. The faint streaks and blemishes visible on the plate come from deterioration of its original coating, which is typical of negatives from this period and offers a useful reminder of how fragile these early photographic materials are.
