The title on this glass negative gives only the surname Mrs. Gates, and the National Photo Company label that supplied it has not been verified, so the sitter remains unidentified. The plate comes from the National Photo Company, a commercial studio in Washington, D.C., whose glass negatives record the city and its residents in the early twentieth century. This is a copy negative, made from an earlier image and given to the collection by Herbert A. French in 1947. Glass plates of this age often show streaks and blemishes where the light-sensitive coating has deteriorated, and those marks are worth noticing when judging the image beneath them.
