The Mrs. Dudley Morgan House is known to us only through a glass negative from the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that photographed buildings, streets and events across the country in the early twentieth century. The title was supplied by the company itself and has not been independently verified, so the name attached to the house should be treated as a working identification. The negative is dated only to a span between 1910 and 1925, reflecting its batch, and it carries the marks of age: the coating on the glass has deteriorated in places, leaving streaks and blemishes that are part of the object's history. The collection came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947.
