This glass negative records a society portrait titled "Mrs. Ogden Mills Reed," though the name comes from the National Photo Company's own notes and has not been independently verified. The plate is generally dated between 1910 and 1920 based on comparable negatives in the same group. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio active in the first half of the twentieth century, produced a large body of portraits and news images, and its glass plates were often made in quick succession. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947. Viewers may notice streaks and blemishes, which result from the gradual breakdown of the original emulsion coatings over time.
