Taken at Walter Reed, the Army's medical center in Washington, D.C., this glass negative records a physiotherapy session, a kind of treatment that grew quickly after the First World War as hospitals worked to restore movement to wounded soldiers. The National Photo Company, a Washington firm that produced press and publicity pictures in the 1910s and 1920s, made the image, and its title comes from the company's own unverified notation. The date is inferred from other negatives in the same range, placing it between 1920 and 1921. Streaks and blemishes on the glass reflect natural deterioration of the original coating over time.
