Taken on January 29, 1921, this glass negative records a piece of suffrage art, a subject that carried particular weight in Washington that winter. The 19th Amendment had been ratified in August 1920, and women voted in a national election for the first time that November, so the cause was moving from campaign toward commemoration. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented city life and public events, made the plate, which Herbert A. French gave to the Library of Congress in 1947. Viewers should note the streaks and blemishes the catalog attributes to deterioration of the original coating.
