The record identifies the sitter as Adolph J. Saboth of Illinois, though the title comes from unverified notes written on the negative or its sleeve, so the identification should be treated as provisional. The National Photo Company, which worked in Washington, D.C., in the early twentieth century, made a large body of glass negatives of people, streets, and events, and this plate dates to about 1921 by comparison with others in its range. The negative was a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947. Its streaks and blemishes come from the natural breakdown of the original emulsion coatings, which affected many glass plates of this age.
