Ambassador and Signora de Martino are the subjects of this portrait, one of the few views in this group that records a diplomatic couple rather than a building or a public event. The National Photo Company, which worked in Washington from the early 1900s into the 1930s, made many formal portraits of officials, diplomats, and their families, and its studio negatives are valued as a record of the capital's social and political life. This example is a glass plate, and the collection notes that the original coating has deteriorated, so streaks and blemishes may show in the image. Its date of January 1, 1926 comes from the title data, which the archive records as unverified.
