This lithograph presents Ma-Has-Kah, or White Cloud, a chief of the Ioway people, and its catalog record singles out his clothing and dress as a central subject. Philadelphia publisher E.C. Biddle issued the color print around 1837, and the inscription credits C.B. King with the work and a lithographic firm with the printing. Portraits like this sold well to a public eager for images of Western peoples, even as the Ioway and neighboring nations were being pressed off their lands. The picture therefore reflects both that fascination and the pressures of removal.
