Ne-Sou-A Quoit, a Fox chief, appears here in the clothing and ornament recorded by the Washington painter Charles Bird King. King spent decades painting Native American visitors to the capital, many of them delegates who came to meet with federal officials, and his portraits became the basis for a large body of prints. This color lithograph, drawn on stone by A. Newsam and printed by Lehman & Duval, was published in Philadelphia by E.C. Biddle around 1837. Its attention to dress and adornment makes it a useful record of Fox fashion in the 1830s, though it reflects the choices of artists and printmakers working for a mostly white audience.
