The setting is the open plain between the San Joaquin and Kings rivers, in what is now south-central California. The lithograph was printed by A. Hoen & Co. of Baltimore from a sketch by Charles Koppel and appeared as an illustration in publications of the U.S. Army Corps of Topographical Engineers. Those surveys, conducted in the early 1850s as the government looked for routes for a transcontinental railroad, produced many views of western landscapes and the people who lived in them. Peoples such as the Yokuts had lived in this valley for generations, and by the mid-1850s settlement and the gold rush were placing heavy pressure on their lands. The print is a record of one moment in that encounter.
