This color lithograph shows a Lipan warrior, one of the Apache peoples who lived on the plains and river valleys of Texas and northern Mexico. The drawing is credited to A. Schott, probably Arnold Schott, an artist tied to the western surveys of the 1850s, and the stone was printed by Sarony & Co. of New York. Prints like this were popular in the decade before the Civil War, when Americans were eager to see the people of the frontier, though such images often reflected the artist's assumptions as much as the sitter's own appearance. Its dating to between 1854 and 1857 places it in that period of intensive survey work and conflict along the southwestern border.
