Heinrich Balduin Möllhausen, a German-born artist and writer, made the drawing that this color lithograph reproduces, and it shows Navajo people as the Whipple survey encountered them in the Southwest. T. Sinclair's Philadelphia shop printed the plate for the official report of the U.S. Pacific Railroad surveys along the 35th parallel, the route Lieutenant Amiel Whipple's party followed in 1853 and 1854 while searching for a workable rail line to the Pacific. Images like this were among the few pictures of the region that most Eastern readers ever saw, and they reflect both the survey's scientific aims and an outside observer's viewpoint.
