Few places on the northern plains mattered to the fur trade as much as Fort Union, the American Fur Company post near the confluence of the Yellowstone and Missouri rivers, and this plate shows goods being distributed to the Assiniboine who gathered there. John Mix Stanley, a painter who worked on the government's Pacific railroad surveys, drew the scene, and the New York firm Sarony, Major & Knapp made the color lithograph for the survey's published general report. Notice how the gathering captures both the routine of the trading post and the wider policy of the period, when gifts and trade goods were a central tool in government dealings with Native nations.
