Karl Bodmer painted this portrait of Pehriska-Ruhpa, a Hidatsa man (called Mönnitarri in the title), dressed in full costume for the dog dance, a ceremony that the plate's title names directly. Bodmer traveled up the Missouri between 1832 and 1834 as the artist for Prince Maximilian of Wied, sketching and painting from life at fur-trading posts and Native villages. René Rollet's aquatint was issued as one of the plates in Maximilian's published travel account. Because Bodmer worked from direct observation, the regalia it records is among the most detailed visual evidence of Plains ceremonial dress from that period.
