This plate shows Mandan dogs hauling loads on sledges, a reminder of how much work the animals did before horses became common on the northern plains. Karl Bodmer painted the scene in 1834 while traveling up the Missouri River with Prince Maximilian of Wied, the German naturalist who was recording the region's peoples and landscapes. René Rollet engraved the image as an aquatint, and it was published in Coblenz between 1839 and 1841 as an illustration in Maximilian's account of the expedition. Its value lies in how carefully it records a everyday transport method that few European observers described in such detail.
