The Chemehuevi were a people of the Colorado River region, and this chromolithograph shows them in the dress of the time, a rare sight for a printed government document. It appeared in the 1861 *Report upon the Colorado River of the West*, the account of the surveys the U.S. Army Corps of Topographical Engineers carried out along the river in 1857 and 1858. Such plates were meant to record the land and its peoples for officials and the public, so the clothing shown here offers a useful, if outsider's, glimpse of Native life on the river in the late 1850s.
