Captain Seth Eastman of the U.S. Army drew this scene of mourners leaving food beside an elevated scaffold that holds a body, and J.T. Bowen of Philadelphia reproduced it as a chromolithograph. It appeared as the third plate in Henry R. Schoolcraft's *Indian Tribes of the United States*, published in Philadelphia in 1851. Scaffold burial was practiced by several Plains and Great Lakes peoples, and offerings of food reflected the belief that the dead still needed sustenance on their journey. Because the image was made by an outside observer, it records a ceremony that Euro-American audiences often misunderstood, and its details are worth reading closely.
