Named simply as Amiskquew, a Menominee warrior, this hand-colored lithograph presents its sitter through his dress rather than a narrative scene. Published in Philadelphia around 1843 by Daniel Rice and James G. Clark, it was drawn, printed, and colored at a single lithographic establishment, so every stage of its making happened in one workshop. Portraits like this were part of a popular 1840s market for images of Native people, and buyers often valued the costume and ornament shown in such sheets. Today the print is useful for seeing how these images presented Native subjects to audiences far from the Great Lakes region where the Menominee lived.
