Shau-Hau-Napo-Tinia, identified in the title as an Ioway chief, is shown in the clothing and ornaments of his people, which the record singles out as the print's main subject. The sheet was printed and colored at I.T. Bowen's lithographic establishment in Philadelphia, a city with a busy trade in hand-colored prints in the 1830s. Published by E.C. Biddle around 1837, it reflects a period when American publishers produced many portraits of Native leaders for eastern audiences, often with close attention to dress and regalia. The Ioway at that time lived west of the Mississippi and were facing growing pressure from treaty negotiations and white settlement.
