Few of the Detroit Publishing Company's views were made inside working machinery, which makes this glass negative an unusual one. It shows a dynamo room with a switchboard, the kind of electrical plant that was spreading quickly through American cities and mining towns in the early 1900s, when power generation was still new enough to draw curious visitors. The company, based in Detroit, sold photographs of scenery, cities and industry, many of them printed from 8 by 10 inch glass plates like this one. The record credits a 1949 gift to the State Historical Society of Colorado, so the plate likely traveled west before reaching the Library of Congress.
