The stenographers' room at Mulford & Petry Co., a Detroit advertising agency, is a view of the inside of a working office, a subject less common in the Detroit Publishing Company files than street scenes and landscapes. The date is recorded only as a tentative 1904, but the setting fits a period when typewriters and women trained in shorthand were becoming a regular part of American business offices. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial photography firm, made this view as an 8 by 10 inch glass negative. Look at the arrangement of desks and work space, which shows how clerical labor was organized in offices of that era.
