Lieutenant Brainerd, an officer of the protected cruiser USS Brooklyn, is the subject of this formal portrait, made in the years just before the Spanish-American War. The Brooklyn was commissioned in 1896 and became one of the Navy's best-known ships in 1898, when it served as flagship of Commodore Winfield Scott Schley's squadron during the blockade and battle off Santiago de Cuba. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced the glass negative, was known for its broad documentation of American places and people, and portraits like this one recorded the officers who served aboard such ships. The attribution to the company rests on the negative number rather than a signature.
