Named for the city of Brooklyn, New York, the U.S.S. Brooklyn was a steel cruiser the Navy commissioned in 1896. This broadside view shows her from the side, with her hull, masts, and gun positions laid out in profile. The ship saw her best-known service in the Spanish-American War, when she took part in the 1898 battle off Santiago de Cuba that destroyed the Spanish squadron there. The glass negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed American cities, rail lines, and ships in the years around 1900.
