The domed central gallery of the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences, which housed the Brooklyn Museum on Eastern Parkway, is the subject here, seen as a light-filled interior space rather than a collection of individual objects. The museum's Beaux-Arts building was designed by the New York firm McKim, Mead & White and opened in the late 1890s, when the Institute was building a major public home for art and science in Brooklyn. Detroit Publishing Company photographers, working in the early 1900s, recorded such civic interiors for travel views and commercial sale, and this glass-plate negative dates to roughly that window, when museum rooms were often arranged for display as much as study.
