Brooklyn fills the right foreground of this 8 by 10 inch glass-plate negative, with the battleship Massachusetts beyond her, and the catalog suggests the two ships may be taking part in a naval parade. Both vessels were commissioned in 1896 and fought at the Battle of Santiago de Cuba during the Spanish-American War in 1898. The Detroit Publishing Company, known for its large-format views of American scenery and towns, made the picture sometime between 1900 and 1920. It reached the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
