The gate at Dock No. 4 led into one of the working docks of the Brooklyn Navy Yard, the federal shipbuilding and repair complex on Wallabout Bay. Founded in 1801, the yard was building and servicing warships for the U.S. Navy by the 1910s, so the entrance records the industrial routine of that work as much as its architecture. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made large-format glass negatives of American cities, railroads and landmarks around 1910 to 1920, produced the view, and two variant negatives of the scene survive.
