The U.S.S. *Maine* sits in dry dock at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in this view, its hull exposed above the blocks where a ship could be cleaned and repaired out of the water. The large 11 by 14 inch glass negative is attributed to the photographer Hart and was cataloged by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose views documented American cities, ports and industry. The *Maine* later became famous when it exploded and sank in Havana Harbor in 1898, an event that helped draw the United States into the Spanish-American War. The record gives a tentative date of 1889, so this picture may come from the ship's early years, before that disaster.
