Here the USS Iowa sits in dry dock at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, its hull fully exposed in a way that ordinary views of a battleship at sea never allow. Once the basin was drained, crews could scrub, paint, and repair the sections normally hidden below the waterline. Iowa was commissioned in 1897, among the newest and largest battleships in the U.S. Navy, and she went on to serve in the Spanish-American War in 1898. The glass negative came from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers documented American cities, landscapes, and industry in the decades around 1900.
