Two glass negatives, meant to be joined side by side, record the East River waterfront of the Brooklyn Navy Yard, with a stretch of lawn and office buildings on one half and the wharves on the other. The yard had been established on Wallabout Bay in 1801, and by the 1890s it was a major center for building and repairing warships for the U.S. Navy. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sent photographers across the country to record cities and industry, listed these views in its 1901 catalog, and the wide format shows the yard's long frontage on the water.
