Among the Detroit Publishing Company views of Brooklyn, this glass-plate group portrait stands out for its subject: the stewards and nurses of the hospital at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, posed together rather than shown as a building or street scene. The Navy Yard, established in 1801 on the Wallabout Bay waterfront, was one of the nation's principal naval shipbuilding and repair facilities, and its hospital cared for sailors and marines stationed or injured there. Detroit Publishing Company, based in Detroit, sold large numbers of such views as photochrom prints and photographs to travelers and collectors around 1900. The portrait's record dates it to between 1890 and 1901, a window that suggests a visit when the staff was still largely a working body of men and women tending naval patients.
