A ward inside the United States Naval Hospital at the Brooklyn Navy Yard is the subject here, a view of the sick and injured seamen who were treated in the Navy's New York facility. The Brooklyn Navy Yard was among the largest naval installations in the country, and its hospital served sailors stationed there and those returning from sea. The picture was made as a glass dry plate negative in the years between 1890 and 1901 by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely documenting American places for commercial sale. Its interior view offers a rare look at the institutional care available to enlisted men in that period.
