Two naval officers, Capt. Joseph N. Miller and Capt. Theodore F. Kane, pose at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, the federal shipbuilding and repair complex on the East River that had operated since 1801. Both men were born in the late 1830s and early 1840s and came of age in a navy that was modernizing quickly, as steel warships began replacing wooden sailing vessels. The Detroit Publishing Company made the picture on a large glass negative, and its catalog dates the image to between 1892 and 1901. The formal, upright posing typical of officer portraits from that era is worth noticing.
