The Sands Street entrance was one of the main gates into the Brooklyn Navy Yard, the federal shipbuilding and repair complex on Wallabout Bay that dates to 1801. Around 1904, when this glass negative was made, the yard was a busy center for building and fitting out warships, and its gatehouses marked the line between the city street and a restricted military workplace. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this view, sold images of American towns, landmarks and industrial sites to travelers and publishers in the early 1900s, so the picture also records how the Navy Yard looked to the public at that time.
