The Brooklyn Navy Yard, shown here in a glass-plate negative from about 1904, was one of the largest and busiest naval shipbuilding and repair sites in the United States. Made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely and sold views of American places to a national market, the picture records the yard's working waterfront at the turn of the twentieth century. The yard, on the East River, built and maintained warships and other government vessels, and it stayed a major employer in Brooklyn for well over a century. Glass negatives of this size captured fine detail, so the plate preserves the scale of the vessels and facilities as they stood at the time.
