The picture turns on a clock and the seamen and officers who depended on it, a detail that sets it apart from the ships and yard views in this group. The Brooklyn Navy Yard, established on the East River in 1801, grew into a major shipbuilding and repair base, and precise timekeeping structured the working day for its crews. The Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed American cities and landmarks around 1900, made this glass negative sometime between 1890 and 1901.
