Piers and wharves along Wallabout Bay formed the working edge of the Brooklyn Navy Yard, where naval vessels tied up to be fitted, repaired, and supplied. The yard had been established in 1801 and grew into one of the country's major naval shipbuilding and repair centers over the nineteenth century. The Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely to document American towns, rail lines, and waterfronts in the 1890s and early 1900s, made this view. The glass negative is cracked along its left edge and has been taped, and its date of roughly 1890 to 1901 rests on the company's 1901 catalog.
