The vessel in this view is the U.S.S. *Terror*, a single-turret armored monitor designed for coastal defense, shown here while being fitted out at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The yard, on the Wallabout Channel along the East River, was among the Navy's busiest places for finishing new warships, where guns, machinery, and fittings were installed before a ship went to sea. The picture was made on a large glass negative between 1896 and 1901, when the Detroit Publishing Company was documenting American cities and industry, and its photographers' sharp, detailed plates preserve the cluttered working look of a shipyard at that time.
