The battleship *Oregon* sits out of the water in a dry dock at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, exposing the hull that is normally hidden below the waterline. The ship had earned fame in 1898 for its voyage from San Francisco around Cape Horn to join the fleet off Cuba during the Spanish-American War, and this view likely dates from late summer or early fall of that year, after the fighting ended. Dry docking allowed crews to inspect, clean and repair a warship's underside, so pictures like this one captured routine but important naval work. The glass negative was made by the Detroit Photographic Company, whose large-format views of American cities and ships are widely held today.
