A floral tribute shaped like a ship, made in memory of the men lost on the battleship Maine, is the subject here, shown at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The Maine exploded in Havana Harbor in February 1898, killing more than 250 American sailors, and the disaster helped push the United States toward war with Spain. Floral pieces like this were a common way to mourn public losses at the time, and the Navy Yard was a natural place to display one. The record gives no date, and the title comes from caption cards written by the Bain News Service, so the exact occasion is not confirmed.
