The entrance to Greenwood Cemetery, with its gatehouse, marks the edge of one of New York's most celebrated burial grounds. Greenwood opened in 1838 as a rural cemetery, a landscaped park of winding paths, hills, and monuments that drew large crowds of visitors as well as mourners. This glass dry plate negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company sometime between 1900 and 1910, when the company was documenting American cities and landmarks for sale as views. Its gatehouse shows how the cemetery presented itself to the public at the threshold.
