Greenwood Cemetery, founded in 1838 on rolling hills at the edge of what was then the city of Brooklyn, was one of the first large rural cemeteries in the country. Its entrance gateway was meant to signal that the grounds were both a burial place and a park, a combination that drew crowds of nineteenth-century visitors who came to stroll among the monuments and wooded paths. This view dates to about 1906 and was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed American cities, landmarks and scenery for a national audience of travelers and armchair tourists in the early twentieth century.
