The clipper ship *Red Jacket*, shown here under its 1854 Brooklyn caption, belongs to the brief golden age of American clippers, when long, narrow hulls and tall sail plans were built for speed. Ships of this type carried passengers and cargo on the North Atlantic and to Australia and China, and their races for fast passages drew wide public attention in the 1850s. The ship's sleek lines and towering rig made it a favorite subject for printmakers of the period, and the image offers a useful view of how maritime pride and commerce were depicted in the harbor city.
