Here the title itself sets the scene: the Brooklyn clergymen Henry Ward Beecher and T. De Witt Talmage are cast as rival performers, with their Sunday sermons treated as competing entertainments. Beecher preached at Plymouth Church in Brooklyn Heights, and Talmage led the Brooklyn Tabernacle, both drawing large weekly crowds in the 1870s. Joseph Keppler, who later founded the magazine *Puck*, drew the cartoon, and it ran as a two-page color spread in the October 23, 1878 issue. The piece reflects the period's appetite for satire aimed at celebrity preachers and at the theatrical side of urban religious life.
