This portrait shows James C. "Red" Smith in a Brooklyn National League uniform, a detail that places him with the club then known as the Superbas. The image is a glass negative from the Bain News Service, a Manhattan-based agency that sold news and feature photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century. The date of about 1913 and the identification of the sitter come from research by the Society for American Baseball Research's Pictorial History Committee in 2006, since the original caption gave only the surname and team. Such player portraits were common in the period, when baseball was a central subject for newspaper readers and the glass plate was the standard medium for press work.
